Fun Indoor and Outdoor Activities for the Summer

Fun Indoor and Outdoor Activities for the Summer

It’s true that we’re all having to deal with restrictions that make this summer like none before. But that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it just as much. Here are a few ideas to add some cheer to the longest days of the year.

Outdoor Activities:

Tennis — Both singles and doubles play are open at our Tennis Center’s eight lighted courts. Private and semiprivate lessons are also available. Be mindful of your tennis balls. According to the USTA site, there’s no specific evidence that tennis balls can spread COVID-19. However, it’s still recommended to replace balls regularly. If possible, spray them with disinfectant (e.g., Lysol or Clorox) after use. Be sure to follow COVID-19 distancing recommendations with nonfamily members. Check out USTA safety recommendations here.

Swimming — Yes, our Aquatic Center is open! Get in some laps at our eight-lane Junior Olympic pool. Take your little ones to the kids splash pool and get a healthy dose of “Vitamin S” on one of the many poolside loungers. Capacity is limited to 75% due to COVID-19 restrictions. Be sure to keep a safe distance from nonfamily members. Entry is first come, first served.

Golf — Enjoy some rounds on our gorgeous 18-hole centerpiece course. Play is back to normal. Double and single carts are available. Social distancing is practiced inside the club and should be followed with nonfamily members on the course as well. Don’t share clubs and balls. Book your tee time online.

Hiking — Get your trekking shoes on and enjoy some quality nature time. Try our miles of walking paths or check out the area’s many beautiful public trails like Belle Isle, Robious Landing Park and Loch Lothian Trail.

Pickleball — Check out the growing rage among net sports. Pickleball is a fun, active combination of tennis, badminton and table tennis. Because of its smaller size, play is restricted to singles. First come, first to serve.

The Market — Time to fill your basket with the freshest farm-direct fruits and vegetables. The Market at Magnolia Green opened on July 11. Check out the finest produce of local growers and unique creations from local artisans.

Indoor Activities:

Inside Camping — Take a camping trip without packing the car. Move aside the furniture and pitch a tent inside. No tent? No worries. Try tossing a blanket over some chairs. Or repurpose a large packing box. There are lots of creative ideas online. Light the fireplace to roast hot dogs and s’mores. A microwave will also do. Pull out the Christmas lights or tea lamps for some indoor starlight. Scary stories are optional.

Board Games — Delight in some friendly family competition. Break out the board games. Favorites like Monopoly and Clue are always a sure bet to entertain. Perhaps raid the attic and dust off some games that have been out of circulation. Bowls of popcorn and cheese curls are strongly recommended!

Coloring Books — Express your artistic side. Coloring books are a great diversion for kids and kids at heart. Stock up on Crayola and markers and go to town. Have a go at Magnolia Green’s Activity Book filled with fun line illustrations highlighting our amenities. Download our coloring book PDF here.

Learn an Instrument — Now that we’re all spending more time at home, there’s no better time to explore your musical side. Inexpensive beginner and used instruments are plentiful online. And quality instruction is as close as your computer screen with many teachers offering their services through video chat. And many, many YouTube tutorials are posted on your instrument of choice. Play on!

Four Square — A bouncing ball, roll of masking tape, an open area and at least four players are all you need to enjoy this favorite playground game. If you don’t have enough room indoors, then an empty garage or patio are ideal. The rules are simple. And everyone can participate. Check out a short video on how to play.

We hope these ideas inspire some fabulous midyear fun. Now that the days are long, it’s time to fill them with some much-needed joy. The options are limitless. So here’s to a super summertime at Magnolia Green!
